Pick-up campers compact your rig by sliding directly into the bed of your pick up truck. There are many advantages to this style rig, but I can see only one disadvantage…space. On the smaller side, these rigs can have most of the amenities, but not much space for anything else.
But don’t worry, today more and more of these units can be seen making the most of the limited space given to them. Before, your average slide in came to the end of the bed of the truck. Now newer models have extended past the edge of the truck, allowing for the unit to be lower on the back end and easier to get in and out of. Some come out so far that it gives enough room to put a door on the side of the unit, giving options for different layouts.
One might worry that you can run into the same problem of class A’s and C’s of having to unhook and break down your set up every time that you want to venture out. But with 4 jacks located on the corners of the unit, all that needs to be done is to lower them down and drive the truck from underneath. Giving you the freedom to go where ever you want.
Unfortunately, the space issue is still hard to overlook. Having the unit take up your bed cuts out the option to have more storage space. So you’re going to be limited to the space in your cab and what storage the unit can offer.
While the slide-in offers all the aspects of RV life in a smaller, easy to drive space, it might be a little difficult to full-time in. I’m not saying that it can’t be done, but one would seriously have to cut down on their material possessions to make it comfortable. I would recommend this, in most cases, as a cheaper route to someone who would be full timing solo.
And this thus concludes our series of choosing your rig. There are more types out there, so if we didn’t get to cover a style that you’re interested in, just make sure to do plenty of your own research or drop us a line! Every rig out there is right for someone, you have to make sure that it’s the right rig for you. So what do you think? What’s your “perfect rig” look like?
